Environmental impact of an opencast operation in the Forest of Dean, England

Journal Article · · J. Environ. Manage.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6401020
An inexpensive method of monitoring the water quality and quantity of the discharge from an opencast coal site in the United Kingdom during 1978-79 is described. The resultant data are discussed and their limitations evaluated. Nevertheless, it was possible to attribute impacts upon discharge and suspended sediment levels directly to opencast activities. The results were used to produce simple predictive models and to evaluate the effectiveness of current legislation in controlling adverse impacts of opencast coal working. The introduction of an Environmental Impact Assessment procedure is advocated. 31 references, 9 figures.
