Neutral particle impact de-excitation cross-section of the fine structure level P-3 sub one of atomic oxygen in the thermosphere

A new upper limit value of 9.9 x 10 to the -21st/sq cm for the mean equivalent de-excitation cross-section of O(P-3 sub one) occurring during collision with neutral particles in the thermosphere is obtained by comparing the P-3 sub one state de-excitation rate due to neutral particle impact with that due to electron impact. Existing data for the cross-section obtained from aeronomic studies reported in the literature are compared with the theoretical values, and it is shown that the former is much lower than the latter.
