There are two types of resource recovery plants, refuse-derived fuel (RDF) and production and user plants, and mass-burning of municipal waste with energy recovery to generate steam. According to DOE, approximately 5,000 tons per day of refuse are processed in the U.S. from 35 plants. The present status and future plans of 8 of these plants are outlined. An interesting example is the Baltimore County Resource Recovery Facility is operational and processes 800 tons/day, 6 day/week. Several thousand tons of d-RDF have been shipped to Wright-Patterson AFB at /27/ton. Approximately 25 to 30 tons/day of ferrous metals are shipped to Bethlehem Steel at /33/ton. Production of RDF and d-RDF continues on an intermittent basis as required by Wright Patterson AFB and local test markets. During the summer of 1980, the aluminum and glass aggregate recovery systems were operating after a long period of inactivity. A market for the glass product in making fiberglass was being explored.
