Ultrasonic measurements of the vibrational relaxation of UF/sub 6/: Mixtures with H/sub 2/, CH/sub 4/, and C/sub 2/H/sub 6/

OSTI ID:6398803
Ultrasonic absorption has been measured in mixtures of 10% and 5% UF/sub 6/ in H/sub 2/, CH/sub 4/, and C/sub 2/H/sub 6/ at 273 and 350 K for f/P ratios from 15 kHz/atm to 2 MHz/atm. The measured absorption was corrected for tube, classical losses, absorption due to rotational relaxation and, for mixtures with CH/sub 4/ and C/sub 2/H/sub 6/, vibrational relaxation of the diluent gas. The resulting absorption was analyzed to determine the vibrational relaxation time of UF/sub 6/ in collisions with the diluent (H/sub 2/, CH/sub 4/, or C/sub 2/H/sub 6/). The relaxation times were found to be greater than 4 x 10/sup -8/ s atm for H/sub 2/ at 273 K; 1.2 x 10/sup -7/ and 1.3 x 10/sup -7/ s atm for CH/sub 4/ at 273 and 350 K, respectively; and 4.9 x 10/sup -9/ and 1.2 x 10/sup -8/ s atm for C/sub 2/H/sub 6/ at 273 and 350 K, respectively.
