System software represents an essential element of a computer control system used for energy management within a building or building complex. Even though system designers must include the proper selection of processor hardware and peripheral devices, it is the real time operating software that executes within the hardware and allows the system to perform the desired tasks. The software architecture and functionality of the various routines within a typical operating system are described. This discussion includes the executive programs, application programs and data base structures. In addition, programming languages, distributed processing concepts and diagnostic programs are considered.
