The public health risks of permitting higher lead emissions from gasoline prompted this hearing on the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) intent in lowering air pollution standards. Fourteen witnesses represented medical, environmental, and safety groups as well as the EPA. Concerns for public safety were countered by EPA's feeling that lead usage will meet existing regulations within four years, and the relaxation of standards is a part of the administration's program of regulatory reform. There was disagreement over whether consumers will elect cheaper leaded gasoline if cars are engineered to burn either leaded or unleaded fuel. (DCK)
