Study of. pi. /sup 0/. -->. mu. (epsilon/sup + -/) decays

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. D; (United States)
We deduce an experimental upper bound (1/2)(GAMMA(..pi../sup 0/..--> mu../sup +/e/sup -/) +GAMMA(..pi../sup 0/..--> mu../sup -/e/sup +/))/ GAMMA(..pi../sup 0/..-->..all) <7 x 10/sup -8/ (90% C.L.) on the branching ratios of ..pi../sup 0/..--> mu../sup + -/e/sup - +/ decays from available data. We consider the existing constraints on the underlying muon-number-violating interaction and find that the present experimental information on ..mu../sup -/..-->..e/sup -/ conversion in sulfur implies an upper limit on the ..pi../sup 0/..--> mu../sup + -/e/sup - +/ branching ratios which is not likely to be larger than 10/sup -15/.
