Title: Current biological research in conversion of cellulosic carbohydrates into liquid fuels: how far have we come

Journal Article · · Biotechnol. Bioeng.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6396491

Current developments in the conversion of cellulosic carbohydrates into liquid fuels are reviewed. Four processes using mixed microbial cultures are described that directly convert cellulose and hemicellulose to ethanol. The production of sugars, which are coverted to liquid fuels by fermentation, by dilute acid hydrolysis are described together with yeast fermentation of starch-derived glucose to ethanol. It is predicted that the most significant advances towards biological production of liquid fuels from cellulosic carbohydrates will occur through the discovery of new microorganisms with expanded genetic versatilities and altered membrane compositions.
