El Cerrejon: The mine keeps growing
The El Cerrejon project is expanding smoothly, steadily increasing production to the design level target of 16.5 million short tpy in 1989. It is the largest coal mine in Latin America. An on-site inspection of the mine and facilities earlier this year revealed a ''magnificent hole in the ground'' full of activity. The infra-structure, technical expertise, and support facilities are largely in place. The first shipment of steam coal came out a year ahead of schedule, as well as being under budget. A series of realistic estimates and an aggressive management are credited for this achievement. The production record has been, and will be: 1985 - 3.1 million tons; 1986 - 5.5 million tons; 1987 - 9.4 million tons; 1988 - 13.2 million tons; 1989 - 16.5 million tons; 2008 - 16.5 million tons.
