Sweet sorghum for biomass and alcohol production

Journal Article · · La. Agric.; (United States)

Sweet sorghum has been grown in the United States since 1957, but its starch content and the rapid inversion of sucrose in sweet sorghum juice have discouraged its use in sugar production. This article describes research at the St. Gabriel Experiment Station to determine the yield potential of sweet sorghum and its possible use for alcohol production. Three varieties were tested in one, two and three drills planted on rows 6 feet wide. The drills and row spacing were selected to accommodate mechanical harvesters which were also evaluated.
