An ultrasonic treating method can be used to separate petroleum compounds from tar sands. A slurry is formed by mixing the tar sand particles with water. This slurry is subjected to ultrasonic waves at a cavitational frequency range, which causes the oil to separate from the water and sand. Equipment necessary to employ this method includes a slurry mixing tank, separator tank, ultrasonic wave inducer, and a means for removing the water and recovering the oil. (15 claims)
