Fusion Safety Program annual report, fiscal year 1988

This report summarizes the Fusion Safety Program major activities in fiscal year 1988. The Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL) is the designated lead laboratory and EG and G Idaho, Inc., is the prime contractor for this program, which was initiated in 1979. Activities are conducted at the INEL and in participating organizations including the Westinghouse Hanford Company (WHC) at the Hanford Engineering Development Laboratory (HEDL), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the University of Wisconsin. The technical areas covered in the report include tritium safety, activation product release, reactions involving lithium breeding materials, safety of fusion magnet systems, plasma disruptions, risk assessment methodology, and computer codes development for reactor transients. Also included in the report is a summary of the safety and facilities design studies and the graphite-air reaction tests performed by INEL for the Compact Ignition Tokamak (CIT) design project, the safety analysis for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) design, and the technical support for the ARIES commercial reactor design study. 22 figs., 8 tabs.
