The optical model based on a deep attractive /ital NN/ potential with forbidden states gives a good description of the variation of the angular distribution of /ital np/ scattering from the /ital U/ shape at energies /ital E//sub lab/ less than or equal to800 MeV to the forward-scattering cone at /ital E//sub lab/ greater than or equal to1 GeV. The evolution of the differential cross section for /ital pp/ scattering is also described well. Reconstruction of the behavior of the /ital NN/ phase shifts for energies from zero to /similar to/2.5 GeV shows that just at energies /ital E//sub lab/ greater than or equal to1 GeV the /ital P/ phase shifts/sup 2/ital S/+1/ delta/sup /ital J///sub 1/(/ital E/), decreasing from delta=..pi.. (at low energies), pass through delta/congruent/..pi../2 and the /ital P/ waves interfere destructively with the /ital S/ and /ital D/ waves in the backward hemisphere. The real part of the potential can be distinguished on the background of the absorption, which increases with energy up to energies /ital E//sub lab/ /congruent/2.5 GeV.
