Equatorial energetic distributions of ions of terrestrial radiation belt as function of solar corona temperature response

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6389487

Differential energy spectra of H, He, c, and O ions with energies exceeding 1 MeV in the radiation belts at the geomagnetic equator in a magnetically quiet period were analyzed. It is shown that at L envelopes'of at least 4 the rigidity of the spectrum is a function of the ion charge state. It is found that the form of the ion spectrum reflects charge states characteristic for coronal temperatures of one million to two million K. This finding is used to explain the existence of dominant streams of heavy ions in the radiation belts.
