ESR studies of the reaction intermediates in. gamma. -irradiated poly(methyl methacrylate)

Journal Article · · J. Polym. Sci., Polym. Chem. Ed.; (United States)
The results of a study of the precursor of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), the ionic intermediates, and the energy transfer mechanism that operates between matrix and solvent in the ..gamma..-irradiated polymer matrices are reported. It was found that the reaction intermediates induced in polymer matrices containing the solutes are radical cations and anions of the solutes, ionic species, and neutral radicals due to the matrices. ESR studies are reported for the formation of the anionic species of PMMA at low temperature and the possible precursor of scission-type radicals of PMMA that were obtained at room temperatures.
