Hydraulic fracturing theoretical principles, laboratory research, field tests
In the past, experimental investigations into hydraulic fracturing have very often been at variance with theoretical principles and results obtained in the field. Technological progress has made it possible to carry out significant experimental investigations both on rocks and on models and to determine fracturing pressures, direction and propagation of fractures, effect of stresses, and effect of stratigraphy. A method is proposed for calculating the size of fractures, taking into account the mechanical properties of the rocks and flow conditions in the fracture and fluid losses into the formation. The problem of supporting fractures in conditions of bottomhole pressure is also discussed. The results observed in the field are interpreted on the basis of both theoretical principles and experimental investigations.
