Precision measurement of the lifetime of the 1s2sthinsp{sup 3}S{sub 1} metastable level in heliumlike O{sup 6+}

The lifetime of the 1s2sthinsp{sup 3}S{sub 1} level of the He-like O{sup 6+} ion has been measured using the Electron Beam Ion Trap in the magnetic trapping mode. A value of 956{sub {minus}4}{sup +5} {mu}s is found, which corresponds to a radiative transition rate of 1046{sub {minus}5}{sup +4} s{sup {minus}1} for the magnetic dipole transition to the 1s{sup 2}thinsp{sup 1}S{sub 0} ground state. This value is in excellent agreement with recent theoretical predictions and distinguishes among different treatments of negative energy states and correlation in multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock calculations. {copyright} {ital 1998} {ital The American Physical Society}
