Laser and spectroscopic properties of Yb-doped apatite crystals

Favorable spectroscopic and laser properties were measured in several Yb-doped apatite crystals: Ca[sub 5](PO[sub 4])[sub 3]F, Sr[sub 5](PO[sub 4])[sub 3]F, and Ca[sub 5-x]Sr[sub x](PO[sub 4])[sub 3]F (x=1-3). The properties included absorption and emission spectra, and laser pumping (slope efficiency).
