Isoscalar character of the J/sup. pi. / = 6/sup +/, E/sub x/ = 5. 125 MeV state in /sup 58/Ni

Transverse (E6) and longitudinal (C6) cross sections for the excitation of the J/sup ..pi../ = 6/sup +/, E/sub x/ = 5.125 MeV state in /sup 58/Ni were measured by means of inelastic electron scattering. The deduced isoscalar component of the particle-hole wave function is found to be two orders of magnitude greater in amplitude than the isovector. This implies that the particle-hole isospin is relatively pure tau = 0 and is not significantly mixed with tau = 1.
