The American Gas Association's third annual Commercial Gas Market Survey identifies current regional and national market trends and provides a data base for market analysis of the commercial sector. Seventy four gas distribution companies accounting for 63% of total US commercial gas sales returned 96 responses in the 1982 survey. Survey results show that commercial consumption of natural gas rose 4% to nearly 2.5 quads, with 33% of the customers and 40% of the sales in the North Central region. Real estate, educational facilities, and health services facilities were the top three users, and space heating accounted for two-thirds of the total sales. There were nearly 17,000 conversions from other energy sources, 89% of which were for space heating. Dual-fuel users bought 14% of the commercial gas. The companies reported having special conditions, such as interruptible service, on their sales, although these were mostly self-imposed. Conservation has reduced consumption per customer 17% since 1973. 20 tables.
