Fish versus fuel: a slippery quandary

Journal Article · · Technol. Rev.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6383188
Impacts on the marine environment from different sources of oil spills are discussed. It is estimated that 6 million metric ton/yr of oil are introduced in the ocean. Tanker accidents account for a small percentage of that amount, possibly only 2-4%. The majority of oil pollution comes from chronic pollution sources, including discharges from industry, runoff from cities, and routine leaks and discharges from oil tankers. Impacts from oil pollution will vary, depending on many factors such as the time of year, the species affected, the location of the spill, and the type of oil spilled. The impacts on fish populations, the need for and cost of fisheries protection, and other oil pollution issues are assessed.
