Global importance of American cropland

The unsurpassed productivity of American cropland significantly affects the domestic economy and international trade. Recent increases in exports of meat, dairy products, and grain give US agriculture a political and humanitarian force that rivals its economic impact. The benefits of this development are balanced by adverse pressures on the land and environment and the social cost of shifting from traditional farming to agribusiness. The use of agricultural exports as a political and foreign policy will affect the decisions made between competing land use and competing national and local interests. (DCK)
