Preventive measures for pipeline stress-corrosion cracking described

Conference · · Oil Gas J.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6382806
Two general approaches exist for preventing stress-corrosion-cracking failures in pipelines: testing to locate the cracks before they cause a failure and preventing or retarding crack growth. In the first approach, hydrostatic retesting has proved the most reliable means of locating significantly large cracks; however, no period of failure-free operation is guaranteed after the retest. Measures that prevent or retard crack propagation involve modifying the environment (as with a coating), lowering the operating temperature and pressure, changing the pipe-to-soil potential, and improving the steel.
