Growth inhibition in Saccharomyces cerevisiae by mercuric chloride has been studied in relation to recovery or detoxification. Cells recover, completely, the ability to grow following an initial lag phase of up to several days. Stationary cells in mercury containing medium recover viability when diluted in mercury-free medium. The loss of mercury from culture medium has been followed using /sup 203/Hg. The loss by volatilization is due to the presence of yeast extract component(s) in the medium and is also a function of the initial mercury concentration. The loss of mercury by its association with the cell mass has been examined in cell fractions obtained from mechanically disintegrated cells. The chemical identity of volatile mercury and of that remaining in the growth medium and in the isolated cell mass is currently under investigation.
