Quark aspects of parity nonconservation in nucleon systems

Two approaches to parity-nonconservation effects in nucleon systems are analyzed and compared. The first is the potential approach based on the meson picture of nuclear forces, and the second is the quark--nuclear approach, in which the NN system is regarded as a multiquark system at short distances. The review has the following aims: to illuminate the theoretical approaches to the study of a complex problem like parity nonconservation in weak NN interactions at the modern quark level and to give the fundamentals to the corresponding formalisms; to show that the standard electroweak model with inclusion of color interactions between the quarks (QCD) is a realistic basis for describing parity-nonconservation effects in NN systems and nuclei at low energies; and to demonstrate that more accurate experimental data could foster further development of gauge models and lead to a more detailed picture of the nuclear forces.
