Direct measurement of the lifetime of the 12. 551-MeV (4/sup +/) state of the nucleus /sup 28/Si( by the blocking effect

The lifetime of the excited level /sup 28/Si( (12.551, 4/sup +/) has been measured in the nuclear reaction /sup 27/Al(p, ..cap alpha..)/sup 24/Mg by means of the blocking effect. From the various parameters of the distortion of the shape of the angular distribution of ..cap alpha.. particles in the vicinity of the <110> axis of an Al crystal it is found that the mean life tau is (3.35 +- 0.12) x 10/sup -16/ sec, which corresponds to a level width GAMMA = 1.97 +- 0.07 eV.
