The use of geostatistics in high level radioactive waste repository site characterization

In evaluating and characterizing candidate sites for use as high level radioactive waste repositories, there is an increasing need to estimate the uncertainty in hydrogeologic data and in the quantities calculated from them. Geostatistical techniques to estimate hydrogeologic surfaces and to provide a measure of the uncertainty in that estimate are described. Maps of the uncertainty estimate can be used to determine where new data should be collected to effect the greatest reduction in uncertainty in the estimated surface. The methods are illustrated, using a set of site characterization data from the top-of-basalt elevations at the Hanford site near Richland, Wash.
