Method-of-lines considerations in ODE software design. [Large, stiff problems]

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6380361

The frequent use of ODE solvers on PDE problems, via the numerical method of lines (NMOL), has significant implications in the design of ODE software. Large, stiff problems are typical, and the use of structure is essential. Solvers based on BDF methods have certain desirable properties here, and the many variant versions of the GEAR and EPISODE packages reflect the needs of NMOL applications.
