Insertion of olefins into palladium(II)-acyl bonds. Mechanistic and structural studies

The reaction of norbornylene with (Pd(PPh{sub 3}){sub 2}(CH{sub 3}CN)(COR))BF{sub 4} (2) produced (Pd(PPh{sub 3}){sub 2}(C{sub 7}H{sub 10}COR))(BF{sub 4}) (3). The crystal structure of 3a (R = Me) revealed a square-planar coordination around the palladium atom. Crystallographic data: space group P2{sub 1}/n; a = 11.430 (10), b = 23.042 (3), c = 16.338 (3) {angstrom}; {beta} = 99.90 (2){degree}; V = 4,238.7 {angstrom}{sup 3}; Z = 4; R = 0.0673, R{sub w} = 0.0894.
