Ground subsidence has been found to be a very significant physical phenomenon that must be dealt with in the design and operation of an underground coal gasification process. This report deals with the types of subsidence that one might expect and how they affect the process. The experience the Soviets had while operating their commercial underground gasification stations is reviewed.
