Solvent extraction of solvent-refined coal ((SRC-II)) liquids to remove heteroatoms that make the coal liquids unsuitable as a refinery feed for gasoline production was studied experimentally by Suntech Inc. for the U.S. Department of Energy. The distribution coefficients of the heteroatom compounds present in coal liquids of different boiling points were determined, to evaluate extraction for the maximum removal of these compounds from the total SRC-II liquid and to prepare raffinates and extracts for hydrotreatment studies. The results indicated that the distribution coefficients for the different types of heteroatom compounds in coal liquids decrease with increasing boiling point. The selectivity of N,N'-dimethylformamide (DMF)/heptane solvent systems for phenolic compounds relative to nitrogen compounds was found to be greater than that of aqueous methanol. Extraction of only approx. 15% of the coal liquids with 8:1 by vol DMF/heptane produced a raffinate that was subsequently hydrodenitrogenated at 6-7 times the denitrogenation rate with the original coal liquid. Milder hydrotreatment of the raffinate eliminates nitrogen compounds with less hydrogenation of the aromatics, and yields an excellent catalytic-cracking charge stock.
