Fate of spills of volatile hydrocarbons: Downward transport versus volatilization. Technical completion report, 1 May 1988-30 April 1990

A three-dimensional spreading coefficient was developed to predict if a non-wetting liquid forms pendular rings or insular lenses in the unsaturated zone. Non-wetting liquids with positive values of the three-dimensional spreading coefficient and form pendular rings in the unsaturated zone. Non-wetting liquids with a negative two-dimensional spreading coefficient have a negative three-dimensional coefficient when their volume is low relative to the total volume of liquid and form insular lenses and positive coefficients when their volume is relatively large fraction of the total volume and form pendular rings.
