Composition of asphaltenes from coal liquids

The composition of asphaltenes from coal liquids, including a Clearfield, Pa., coal extract, a Synthoil liquid, and a light distillate from Exxon Donor Solvent (EDS) liquefaction, isolated by solvent extraction with benzene and subsequent precipitation with cyclohexane, was studied by high-resolution mass-spectroscopy, proton NMR, IR, and other techniques. A total of 1269 individual hydrocarbons and heterocompounds in 30 ppm to 2 3< concentrations, members of 234 homologous series (C/sub 6/-C/sub 30/), were identified in the light EDS asphaltene fraction. Volatilized asphaltene compounds from the EDS distillate were unexpectedly similar to those generally found in pentane- or cyclohexane-soluble coal liquid extracts. The molecules contained only one structural unit in most cases, but heavier molecules contained 1-3 such units, which are two- to eight-ring aromatic hydrocarbons associated with 1-3 functional groups and/or naphthanic rings and short side-chains. The most abundant components were those with two, one, and three oxygen atoms per molecule and hydrocarbons in decreasing order. Only 30-50 % of the organic oxygen was in the hydroxyl form, with significant concentrations of ether bridges and furan rings. Acids and amides were found only in the asphaltanes from coal extracts.
