Optical properties of fly ash in coal fired furnaces
One of the most important parameters characterising the radiative behaviour of a fly ash cloud in pulverized fuel furnaces has been found to be the optical properties of the ash as determined by the complex refractive index. Available data were limited and inconsistent, and only one in situ measurement on a large boiler has been reported. The in situ measurements were repeated with greater precision and measurements of infrared absorption spectra were made on fly ashes from different coals. These measurements suggest that the high reported values of the absorption index of fly ash particles may be due to unburnt char present at the furnace exit where measurements were made or where ash is sampled.
