Hydrotreating process to minimize catalyst slumping

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6374333
This patent describes a hydrotreating process. It comprises feeding oil into an ebullated bed reactor; injecting hydrogen-rich gases into the reactor; dispensing a hydrotreating catalyst into the reactor to form a catalyst bed; expanding the catalyst bed; hydroprocessing, contacting, and mixing the oil and gases in the presence of the catalyst in the reactor to produce an upgraded hydrotreated oil; while concurrently substantially deflecting the catalyst downwardly and inwardly away from the walls of the reactor with an annular internal baffle positioned adjacent the walls in the bottom portion of the reactor while simultaneously substantially minimizing clustering of the catalyst in the reactor by increasing upward velocity of the oil and gases.
