Because blowouts all result from different situations, each requires a case-by-case analysis if the most appropriate control techniques are to be developed. Shallow gas blowouts, which are the most common, follow this same rule. However, past experiences and a study of other shallow events have shown important similarities in causes and probable results. This article shows that many shallow gas blowouts have some relationship to cementing operations and it will discuss details of several case histories. Since most shallow gas kicks result in blowouts, an additional objective is to present emergency response procedures for personnel and rig safety.
