LLL 40 mm gun: compressed helium breech performance
Conference
·
OSTI ID:6373873
The LLL 40 mm gun system, developed for 1-dimensional impact studies of toxic materials has now been test-fired using two propelling techniques. The gunpowder breech described in an earlier report is now capable of propelling our 158 gram projectile up to 2 Km/sec, satisfying the high velocity requirements. The low velocity impacts below 0.5 Km/sec are produced by applying a blast of compressed helium to the base of the projectile. The design and testing of the compressed gas breech are described.
