An automatic transmission system is described for vehicles having a friction clutch coupled to an internal combustion engine. A speed-change-gear type transmission is coupled to the clutch. A first actuator operates the clutch is in response to an electric signal. A second actuator for operating the transmission is in repsonse to an electric signal. Means for producing first and second control signals control the operations of the clutch by ON/OFF conditions and of the transmission by gear change positions, respectively, in response to a command signal from an operating unit.
