A consumer guide to help the homeowner sort through a range of options for improving the energy efficiency of his home, this book presents only those designs, systems, and applications that make sense in the mid-1980s. Suggestions are given for improving existing building systems. Subsequent chapters describe specific alternative energy and its applications: solar domestic water heating, passive solar heating and cooling, active heating and cooling, heating with wood, energy from the wind, and photovoltaics. Guides and shortcuts to information help the consumer through the decision process. Heating and cooling degree-day maps, computer software and applications, and energy tax credit information appear in the appendix. Each chapter includes photographs and diagrams to illustrate the systems and lists of suppliers. 32 tables.
