Process descriptions and a tabulation comparing the main characteristics of 11 methods of processing coal, oil shale, heavy oil and oil sand to produce synthetic crude, gas, tar, and electricity are given. The following processes are discussed: (1) in-situ retorting of oil shale by combustion; (2) in-situ processing of oil shale by induction heating; (3) in-situ proccssing of oil shale by dielectric heating (4) surface mining and separation of oil sand; (5) induction heating of coal and oil sand in-situ; (6) steam injection recovery of heavy oil in-situ; (7) induction heating of heavy oil in-situ; (8) tertiary recovery in-situ of viscous oil by steam injection; (9) tertiary recovery in-situ of viscous oil by induction heating; (10) liquefaction of mined coal; and (11) underground gasification of coal. 14 references.
