Compressed-air energy storage (CAES) is a modular, environmentally acceptable and economically attractive energy storage technology. Many utilities are concerned about the availability and viability of sites for underground air storage. Many of these concerns can be resolved by using the extensive experience of the natural gas storage industry. This paper summarizes results of EPRI research for siting CAES plants in various geological formations. Geotechnical methods and examples are presented to help utilities evaluate air storage sites available in their service area.
