Anti-freezing method and apparatus for ground surrounding liquefied-gas-storing underground tank

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6368299
Because the freezing of subsurface soil surrounding an underground LNG storage tank exerts a pressure on the tank that jeopardizes the tank's safety, Japan's Kajima Kensetsu KK developed a method for warming the ground around the tank by circulating water in an adjacent column. A synthetic resin bag or envelope placed in the column is filled with granular materials such as sand or gravel to form a water-permeable body. Water injected into the bottom of the column and discharged from the top warms the ground surrounding the underground tank to prevent freezing.
