An improved electrolyte matrix for a molten-carbonate fuel cell can withstand the great stress of rapid thermal cycling between the cell operating temperatures and room temperatures without cracking and losing its gas-separation capability. The matrix consists mostly of tiny (less than a micron) support particles along with a small amount (perhaps only a few percent) of much larger crack-attenuating particles. For a lithium-potassium bicarbonate electrolyte, for example, the matrix would comprise 90 vol % submicron lithium particles and 10 vol % alumina particles with an average size of 100 microns.
