Heat pump systems for residential use

A simplified heat pump design offers improved efficiency for residential heating or cooling in temperate climates, where temperature extremes rarely occur. Basically a reverse-Brayton-cycle heat pump, the device has a turbocompressor that can be driven by either a gas-fired recuperated Brayton engine or an electric motor. Besides the load heat exchanger, an additional sink heat exchanger adds waste heat from the drive unit to the air for space heating. Designers expect a heating coefficient of performance of 1.6 on a 45/sup 0/F day; below 45/sup 0/F, the system maintains its heating capacity and COP.
