First yoke mooring for a VLCC in the open ocean
- Exxon Prod. Res. Co.
The first yoke mooring for a VLCC in the open ocean is in use with a SALS (Single Anchor Leg Storage) system installed Mar. 1978 in the South China Sea 213 km off the East coast to West Malaysia in 214 ft (65 m) of water with a 167,000 dwt storage tanker from which shuttle tankers have lifted parcels from 100,000 to 740,000 bbl. Alongside mooring operations, which have been trouble free, are outlined. Technical aspects of the mooring system such as the design philosophy, model testing performed, and engineering criteria are described, including novel aspects of the installation procedure, the horizontal tow of the combined mooring base and riser, the free upending of the system, the vertical tow of the system to the mooring site, and the hookup of the VLCC with the rigid yoke to the installed riser.
