Guide for safe storage and handling of heated petroleum-derived asphalt products and crude oil residua

This publication provided discussion and precautions to be followed by personnel for the storage and handling of asphalt products derived from crude petroleum when stored in heated tanks. These products were: paving asphalt cements; road oils; slow, medium, and rapid curing cutback asphalts; asphalt emulsions; asphalt compounded with special hydrocarbon-type diluents; and fillers and industrial asphalts such as those used for roofing and waterproofing. The following potential hazards of asphalt handling, with their causes and precautions were discussed: boilover of hot asphalt, vapor flashing, autoignition, hydrogen sulfide, and tank failure. Guideline temperatures for storage and handling asphalt products were included.
