This paper presents a computer-aided method for modeling permanent magnet (PM) generators. The method is general in nature so that it can be applied to detailed computer-aided design process of PM generator systems. The method is valid for studies involving symmetrical as well as asymmetrical faults in PM generators, including the effects of magnetic circuit saturation, space harmonics in the flux linkages and the influence of both factors on machine parameters. This generalized method is used in conjunction with IEEE Standard 115 in a unique approach to compute conventional dqO frame steady state and subtransient inductances and time constants, as well as to predict the transient performance of a 75 KVA, 400 Hz, PM generator system.
