The reaction of the 2,2,2-trichloroethylidene derivatives of acetylacetone and acetoacetic and malonic esters with zinc and ..cap alpha..-chloro sulfides gave high yields of the C-alkylation products 3-alkylthiomethyl-3-(2,2-dichlorovinyl)-2,4-pentanediones, 2-alkylthiomethyl-2-(2,2-dichlorovinyl)-3-oxobutyric esters, and 2-alkylthiomethyl-2-(2,2-dichlorovinyl)malonic esters.
