The conformational effects of cis and trans substituents on 1,4-dihydrobenzene, 1,4-dihydronaphthalene, and 9,10-dihydroanthracene were investigated with an empirical force field. It is found that steric repulsions between the substituents and the ortho ring hydrogens (peri interactions) lead to complex structural behavior. The possibility of chair-like structures and the interconversion between chair and boat forms is discussed. 24 references, 8 figures, 1 table.
