Influence of the surface structure on the kinetics of ethane hydrogenolysis over Ni/SiO/sub 2/ catalyst

Hydrogen adsorption and ethane hydrogenolysis kinetics were measured over a wide range of temperatures and pressures over six catalysts containing 4.5-45% nickel on silica with surface average diameters of 2.5-22 nm. The reaction rate, previously reported as depending on particle size, was independent of pressure and temperature. The previously developed relationship between reaction rate and hydrogen coverage was not valid for the less active catalysts as apparently hydrogen adsorbed on sites that were inactive in hydrogenolysis, probably on (111) planes. The correspondence of ethane hydrogenolysis and hydrogen adsorption on the more active samples indicated that all active sites were equivalent, i.e., the reaction was structure insensitive if the (111) planes were disregarded.
